In Guardian of Paradise (Der Wächter des Paradieses, 1889), Franz Stuck paints the angel posted at the gate of Eden after the Fall. He stands upright and unmoving, sword in hand, and nothing in his face suggests he can be argued with. It’s a calm, severe image about exile and what can’t be taken back, and it was one of the early works that made Stuck’s name.

Stuck was a leading German Symbolist, a co-founder of the Munich Secession, and a teacher of Kandinsky and Klee. Where much of his later work deals in temptation, this painting stands on the other side of the story: the closed gate and the warning.

This print is made for the dark academia library, the moody bedroom, the gothic gallery wall, or the altar corner.

WHY IT WORKS ON A WALL
It’s a strong vertical piece with a stern, quiet presence, and it makes a good entryway or hallway print. It also gives the Stuck set its other half. Hang it beside Lucifer for the fallen angel and the angel at the gate, or pair it with Sin and Medusa.

CHOOSE YOUR FINISH

  • Matte Paper: Smooth, non-reflective, and rich in the shadows. Our most popular option and an excellent everyday choice.
  • Fine Art Textured Paper: Heavier paper with a subtle grain that gives the print the feel of an original painting. Our pick if you want a gallery look without the cost of canvas.
  • Canvas Print: A real canvas surface for the closest thing to a painted piece. Ready to hang.
